| GFI LANguard 9 Review - It's about people, technology and processes |
Built on top of the excellent GFI LANguard NSS v.8 I reviewed
here,
LANguard 9 breaths a fresh air of new functionality and GUI design.
Judging by the extensive list of functionality already presented in the
product, little was expected from GFI to be added to it's vulnerability
management application, LANguard 9. But I was in for a big surprise as
GFI kept and improved the existing features whilst adding new
modules and functions specific to IT security management. I will not re-state the well done patch management and scanning features of LANguard which you can read here - great scanning engine, 15,000+ signatures, extensive reporting using GFI ReportCenter, flexible scanning profiles using Scanning Profiles Editor, remote patch deployment etc - instead I will focus on what's new and innovative: Security Status Dashboard The latest version of
LANguard it's been designed with security management in mind , which
gets the product closer to the corporate security management
policies and procedures. The most notable concept which was introduced
in this version is "Network Audit". By extending the product scope into
the It audit operations, GFI proves to have adopted a global risk
management process throughout the enterprise. They're not
working with hosts and individual vulnerabilities, instead the user is
presented an easy to understand security dashboard comprising :
The New Languard 9 offers new scanning profiles which provide valuable data to IT Operations as well as IT Security Departments. It is very easy to initaite a full sweep scan using specific IT audit profiles like :
Configuration Audit & Vulnerability Reporting As soon as scanning has finished, the user is presented with a comprehensive display of details about the scanned hosts so that decisions can be easily made in order to mitigate the overall security risk. The operator can explore the classical vulnerability related data corelated with asset inventory and audit information in an easy to browse tree-like structure. Having as much asset data as possible at one's fingertips facilitates informed decisions because it reflects the real world situations when the business value and role of an IT asset dictates the level of patching thus making some vulnerabilities an accepted risk. Every IT professional uses a swiss army knife for regular network troubleshooting and GFI Languard 9 offers an very useful list of everyday network tools such as :
![]() New Pricing , FREE Version Available In an admirable effort to sustain it's partners and customers, GFI has released a full-featured FREE version of LanGard to be used for up to 5 IPs. We Care is the name of this new campaign which gets GFI a well deserved respect from the community, quote: "At GFI Software, we believe that in hard economic times, vendors should work both with their channel partners and companies in general to assist them in sustaining their business until the economy bounces back". I believe that an organization can easily use GFI LANguard 9 to mitigate security risks by addressing each of the three pillars of security management : People, Technology and Processes. LANguard 9 offers reliable, high-performance security out-of-the box, adapts itself to business processes and security procedures in an environment easy to use by security engineers and managers alike.
