McAfee Total Protection 2008 Review
McAfee returns with great improvements. Through the new edition McAfee Total Protection 2008, the designers managed to combine their ambition of an impressive number of features, many of which are functional and handy, along with a more efficient running of the program which now is less of a “burden” for your PC.

PCmagazine sees McAfee’s pricing model as setting him off from the crowd. McAfee Total Protection 2008  offers three installations at a subscription price, but unlike other modern suites which would require you to purchase another package to add a fourth computer, McAfee is more permissive, proposing additional licenses for an introductory price of $10/year, pro-rated to match the main subscription.

What this means is that, if, for example, your subscription has nine more months to go, adding another computer will only cost $7.50.

Dealing with such an abundance of features can be quite a chore. McAfee solved this by placing the most common tasks and features in the basic view and creating an advanced view for more complex settings. The buttons to activate an update, run a scan, and fix any configuration difficulties are the most salient and any update goes off in the background without the user doing a thing.

Detailed status and configuration options can be easily accessed from the main window but sometimes finding a specific feature can be challenging.

McAfee Total Protection 2008  does a good job at keeping out malware and has excellent precision with antispam. It also offers remote monitoring and repair over network and provides easy backup/restore.

Still, the firewall is not at its best with this suite and parental control can be easily avoided just the same as porn image blocking is not very reliable. The great number of ancillary features certainly makes it a tough competitor but the essential ones leave enough room for development.
