| F-Secure Internet Security 2008 Review |
F-Secure's main stress does not fall as with most of
today’s suites on the amount of features for more
attractiveness. Instead, the single novelty it brings is an optional
30-day free trial of F-Secure Mobile Anti-Virus for smartphones, all
the other adjustments being internal and designed to make the suite
much stronger and flexible. The firewall comes with these choices: Block All, Office, Strict, Normal, Custom, and Allow All, which in their turn offer some other particular options. You if want to do some fine-tuning yourself, just help yourself with a click on Advanced settings . PCmagazine informs us that although F-Secure's 2007 suite received both Checkmarks from West Coast Labs, the 2008 product hasn't been subjected to testing yet. The most recent test, that is, an on-demand scanning by AV-Comparatives, rated it ADVANCED+, the maximum possible rating. The antivirus and antispyware combined protection does the scanning of files on access, on demand, and on schedule, the latter offering the option for daily, weekly, or monthly scans and for setting it to wait until the computer has been unused for some time before initiating a scan. Any threat in your incoming e-mail will be stripped out, while any threat present in an outgoing message will be completely blocked. The System Control feature introduces F-Secure's DeepGuard technology which identifies good and bad programs based on behavior. System Control terminates indisputably dangerous processes immediately and reports its action in a small temporary window. Should there be any doubt, it pops up a big window providing all the information of what has been detected and inquiring you whether to trust the program. With Norton and Panda, on the other hand, all the important decisions are made without stressing out the user. Scanning the system for malware was very successful, even Trojans and rootkit samples were fully detected. As PCmagazine stated, however, in some cases it didn't entirely remove the threat which means that some significant executable files were “excused”. F-Secure Internet Security 2008 managed to score 8.8 out of 10, pretty close to CA suite's 9.0 and a bit more than BitDefender Total Security 2008’s 8.6. When commercial keyloggers were used in another testing, the application identified a little over half the samples but completely removed only half of these, for a final score of 4.5 out of 10 while on the same test Panda got 2.1 and Norton Internet Security 2008 did the wonderful job of removing every single keylogger. After the scanning is finished, F-Secure Internet Security 2008 offers to clean up the discovered threats by automatically applying its default actions. Blocking the malware proved to be not such an easy task for F-Secure Internet Security 2008. In numerous occasions, it did not let the installer to write some ( not all, though) of the malware files to disk. At this test F-Secure Internet Security 2008 got an 8.6 out of 10 but it can work a bit harder to catch Norton with 9.0 or Panda with a perfect 10.0. |
