From the creators of NOD32 antivirus product we are now presented with ESET Smart Security protection suite (with NOD32's antivirus protection included).

The protection itself features a real-time file-system and Internet monitor, scans for Microsoft Office documents and Outlook e-mail, and numerous secondary threat-detection tools (the "ThreatSense Scanning Engine"). ESET makes its presence known only if something suspicious, like coming across a virus in a user download, gets its attention.

One of its attributes is ‘discretion’, most of the time the application running quietly, with the virus data base updating itself by default, without any prompting needed. You can be notified if any new sets of program updates have been applied by a pop-up balloon included in the program's tray icon.

Incoming as well as outgoing messages and Outlook mail are checked by the mail scanner which afterwards cleans and moves any infected messages to their own folder. The mail module is created to assist you in dealing with the Outlook mail, giving you the option to convert e-mail bodies to plain text by default, and also enabling you to have any already-scanned e-mail rescanned by default after a signature update.

However, you cannot perform a thorough and somehow necessary classification of the messages although the program recognizes messages sent from persons in your address book as being good, having recipients to whom you reply automatically included in white lists.

When you download something from the Web, it is automatically scanned. For the advanced users it is also possible to scan traffic from different Web clients by configuring ESET, using for this, one of two modes: passive, for greater compatibility; or active, for more successful filtering, though no significant difference between the two can actually be noticed. A main feature of the program is that the firewall's default protections are completely automatic, though the firewall can also function in interactive mode.

If you are familiar to NOD32 products, the ESET Smart Security will only emphasize a progress of their conception; if this is your first time to use ESET's products you are most likely to be in for a great pleasant surprise as efficiency and silentness are still the trademarks of ESET.
