Alan Cox, one of the most respected figures in the U.K. open-source community, has warned about complacency over the security of open-source projects.

Speaking to delegates at London's LinuxWorld conference on Wednesday, he emphasized that considerable sums of money were being spent in attempting to hack into open-source systems.

Fedora Core 6 (FC 6) is now available, offering Red Hat users a view of the latest and greatest in open source technologies.

It could also be seen as a preview of what is coming in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, though Fedora is now a well-established Linux distribution in its own right.

The GNU telephony project reports that GPL-licensed implementations of two key security protocols are available for use in Linux-based VoIP (voice-over-IP) devices and softphones. Additionally, a GPL-licensed softphone based on the new implementations is already available for download, testing, and use.
