Symantec researchers have discovered a special crafted Word document which deploys malware on the infected Macintosh computers. Yes, the file was forged using the Macintosh version of Word and it's designed to exploit a recent Word security hole fixed by Microsoft on Tuesday.

Spam has been taken to a whole new level by using MP3 attachment files named after celebrity artists and using the audio files for pump-and-dump stock scam; many emails have no subject, or they appear to bear the name of the artist who's name is also used in the attached MP3 file.

The Federal Trade Commission has finally put an end to the Media Motor dispute which started in October 2006. ERG Venture, the financial arm of Media Motor, has been obliged to pay $330,000 as a penalty for distributing spyware.

One of the most notorious change in August is the dramatic drop in email malware with one infested email in every 1000 emails during August as opposed to one in 322 averaging for January - June 2007.

The adware vendor Zango, a.k.a 180solutions has been forced to drop it’s legal attempts to get both Kaspersky Lab and PC Tools to reclassify its applications as non-adware and prevent security software from blocking them.

Kaspersky Lab informs that the US District Court of Washington has ruled in their favor, granting immunity from liability in a case brought by Zango which insisted that  its software , which install advertising pop-up ads, were being wrongly blocked.

The botnet built by Storm worm has increased dramatically to include 1.7 million zombies (infected computers) according to security services provider SecureWorks, who state that although the network has so far been primarily used to send spam, it could also be used for DDoS attacks on businesses or even countries.

Adware and spyware are a real nuisance for all Windows users. Maintaining up to date anti-virus and anti-spyware systems is hard enough but now Microsoft wishes to create “adware framework” and implant it into Windows.
