The   'halloween.exe' is a copy of the Storm Trojan which compromises the user's PC and merges it into a network of computers that can be commandeered remotely by a controlling server.

Although it seems that considerable progress has been made regarding the fight against spyware, the legal representatives in such a battle say a major change of the outcome depends now on the approval of the SpyAct by the US Congress. This would lead to civil fines on companies that distribute spyware to consumers' computersFTC (U.S. Federal Trade Commission) gets the authority to impose such fines. The bill is currently stalled in the Senate.

Symantec researchers have discovered a special crafted Word document which deploys malware on the infected Macintosh computers. Yes, the file was forged using the Macintosh version of Word and it's designed to exploit a recent Word security hole fixed by Microsoft on Tuesday.

The Federal Trade Commission has finally put an end to the Media Motor dispute which started in October 2006. ERG Venture, the financial arm of Media Motor, has been obliged to pay $330,000 as a penalty for distributing spyware.

It wouldn’t be the first time except the fact that Microsoft wants to patent “Advertising triggered by sequences of user actions” which is in fact the same thing as Adware. Sweet.
