Internet security vendors were put on alert as news of a computer threat, dubbed "The Obama worm", spread across the industry earlier this week. The "Obama worm" was discovered on the network of a K-12 school and first reported by Walling Data, North America's top distributor of AVG Internet Security Products. Only on Mondays a semi-transparent image of the President's face pops up in the bottom right hand corner of infected computers. The threat is more of nuisance than a serious threat but can completely destroy a machine's ability to function. |

PandaLabs, Panda Security's malware analysis and detection laboratory, today revealed that almost six percent (5.77 percent) of the two million computers they scanned showed an infection by the malicious Conficker worm. The worm, which originated in China, has now extended across 83 countries, and is particularly virulent in the United States, Spain, Taiwan, Brazil and Mexico. In the U.S. alone, PandaLabs has identified at least 18,000 infected computers, although the real figure could be much higher. |

win.rar GmbH, official publisher of the WinRAR compression program and RARLAB products warns users of fraudulent Google AdWords: "We have been informed that someone has fraudulently placed Google AdWords in our name and is directing users to a faked page of download.com. This page offers a modified WinRAR installation file (winrar.exe) for downloading," says Öncül Kaya, Managing Director of win.rar GmbH in describing the case. "To remove the file that is actually infected with malware, the scammers offer to sell users an 'anti-spyware solution' through a further link." |

It's no surprise -- surfing the Internet without a security software installed brings dangerous consequences, especially since the growth of Web threats have increased by nearly 2000 percent since 2005. According to Trend Micro threat researchers, more than 50 percent of the top 100 malware of 2008 came from the Internet and were accidentally downloaded by users surfing unknown or malicious Web sites. |
