Computer researchers University of Cambridge in the UK have developed a new defense tactic against hacking attacks by implementing suicide instructions in computer networks under attack.

The approach works by giving all the devices on a network or "nodes" - the ability to destroy themselves, taking any nearby malevolent device with them. Self-sacrifice provides a check against malicious nodes attacking legitimate ones.

Investigators led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service have arrested 77 people as part of a global fraud crackdown which has since January intercepted more than $2.1 billion in counterfeit checks bound for the United States.

The eight-month investigation involved schemes in Nigeria, the Netherlands, England and Canada, and has stopped more than half a million fake checks from being mailed to American victims.

The results reveal a false sense of online security among the US repondents due to the lack of consumer security education. A firewall won't protect you unless it's turned ON, same for anti-virus and other anti-malware tools.

Commerce Bank, which is a regional bank in US, said that it was the victim of a security breach but the attack was quickly stopped and the law enforcement was notified.

Commerce Bank, which operates banks in five U.S. states, said Tuesday that a hacker gained access to a database with about 3,000 customer records and accessed data belonging to 20 of them. The bank is contacting those who may have been affected.

Hackers have turned YouTube into a spam channel by exploiting legitimate users invite feature. YouTube users have the facility to “Invite Your Friends”, which in effect allows them to send email to any address from their YouTube accounts.

This functionality is what the spammers are exploiting. The spam message is just like any “Invite Your Friends” message, except that it includes the typical spam content and links to spam Web sites. The messages all come from service@youtube.com.
