Antivirus : Blue Ridge/Secure AppGuard Defends Against Koobface Worm

Blue Ridge Networks today confirmed that Blue Ridge/Secure AppGuard™ protects users of social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Bebo, and MyYearbook from the Koobface worm and its variants.

The worm infects PCs and sends user credentials to a remote server. An attacker can then spoof a legitimate Facebook user and further distribute the worm via messages to un-suspecting friends. This in turn compromises even more systems, exposes personal and corporate data and permits the attacker to install permanent data theft software.

Unlike traditional anti-malware and antivirus products, AppGuard does not rely on signatures to identify incoming malware. Instead, it guards at-risk applications and prevents them from performing actions, such as loading a Trojan horse, which would indicate that the applications have been compromised.

This approach enables AppGuard to stop unknown malware, while signature-based solutions can only intercept malware that has been previously identified. Studies have shown generic signature-based security software stops about 45% of new malware. By adding AppGuard, overall protection can be increased to cover over 90% of today and tomorrow's malware.

"Social networking sites are proving to be fertile ground for cyber attacks. Users naturally trust the communications that pass throughout the network, which works in the attackers' favor," said Mike Fumai, CEO of Blue Ridge Networks. "And as businesses increase their use of social networks for marketing and sales purposes we expect to see even more attempts to exploit these sites using increasingly sophisticated malware."

AppGuard is client-based software designed for consumers and enterprises to neutralize malware attacks against social-networking sites and the applications most targeted by hackers, such as Web browsers, Microsoft Office Applications, and Media Players. Additional applications are easily added to the guarded list by either System Administrators or end-users.

Blue Ridge/Secure AppGuard is priced at $24.95 per user. A free, 30-day trial is also available.
