Linux Security

Discretix, the leading provider of embedded security and DRM (Digital Rights Management) solutions, and MontaVista® Software, Inc., the leader in embedded Linux® commercialization, today announced a partnership aimed at bringing a new class of multi-scheme digital rights management protection to the mobile Linux device category. The two companies have demonstrated the integration of MontaVista Linux and Discretix CPRM (Content Protection for Recordable Media) November 19-21 at Embedded Technology 2008 in Yokohama, Japan.

Discretix CPRM secures the distribution and use of music, video and other premium content on mobile handsets. As a software-based security solution, CPRM Client eliminates the need for a dedicated hardware CPRM chip, reducing bill of materials cost and greatly improving flexibility for mobile device OEMs.

Fully compliant with 4C-Entity standards, CPRM protects music, movies, photos and other multimedia content subject to commercial digital rights while in use or in storage. The solution can be used in parallel with other DRM (Digital Rights Management) schemes such as OMA DRM, WM-DRM (JANUS), i-Mode and ECFM, allowing manufacturers to address multiple standards on a single device. It also supports all major CPRM formats such as SD-Binding, SD-Audio, SD-Video and SD-Separate Delivery (SD-SD).

By tightly integrating Discretix CPRM with MontaVista Linux, Discretix and MontaVista are giving mobile device OEMs new options for strong, secure and open source-based content storage and delivery. MontaVista Linux, used in 90 percent of all Linux-based smartphones, is a tested and hardened Linux OS optimized for mobile devices.

The platform offers significant advantages over conventional operating systems including a smaller footprint, longer battery life, faster bootup, NSA-level mobile security, and out-of-the-box support for design protocols including SDIO (Secure Digital Input Output), WiLAN/Wi-Fi over USB, Bluetooth over USB, USB On-The-Go and many others.

"Mobile device manufacturers are increasingly embracing the advantages of a Linux-based operating system for which a robust and flexible content protection structure is more important than ever," said Edo Ganot, EVP Sales and Business Development for Discretix. "Discretix' CPRM is well suited for integration in a wide range of Linux implementations. Through its integration with Mobilinux, OEMs can now offer world-class content protection on the number one mobile Linux OS."

"MontaVista is helping its customers go to market quickly with an operating system platform of unparalleled quality and unparalleled embedded Linux expertise. Discretix CPRM gives our customers a new dimension of protection for a wide range of content," said Joerg Bertholdt, Vice President of Marketing of MontaVista. "In particular, Discretix' multi-scheme architecture gives our customers, as well as carriers and content providers, the ability to accommodate changing DRM standards--a key factor as content delivery continues to evolve."

In addition to the combination of Mobilinux 5.0 and Discretix CPRM, the platform on display at Embedded Technology 2008 will include TI's M-Shield™ and ACCESS Linux Platform™. The solution will be demonstrating at MontaVista Software Japan, Inc.'s exhibit, Booth E-07 at the Pacifico Yokohama exhibition hall.
