Sunbelt Software, a leading provider of Windows security and management software, today announced the top ten most prevalent spyware and malware threats for the month of October. The report, compiled from monthly scans performed by Sunbelt's award-winning antispyware tool, CounterSpy™, and its new anti-malware solution, VIPRE™ Antivirus + Antispyware, is a service of the Sunbelt Software Malware Research Labs.
A new threat that appears for the first time in the top ten lists includes the INF.Autorun (v) threat. The INF.Autorun (v) is a generic family of threats that use Autorun.inf files to automatically launch backdoors, trojans, and trojan downloaders when certain files or folders are accessed by the user. After execution, these malicious files will usually download additional malware to the compromised box.
The results represent the number of times a particular spyware or malware infection was detected during CounterSpy and VIPRE scans that report back to Sunbelt's community of opt-in users.
