Experts have warned social networking sites like Facebook are putting company networks at risk following revelations of phishing attacks targeting them. Many organisations are now routinely allowing employees to access the sites at work but internet security experts warn they could compromise security.
David Lavenda, vice president of marketing and strategy at WorkLight, an online security specialist said: "Companies currently gain substantial B2B and B2C benefits by using social networking sites to uplift sales and promote products and services.
"Yet as phishers target Facebook users, secure access to these sites is a must-have on the security front."
For a while now security experts have been wary of Facebook and other peer-to-peer networks due to their difficulty to monitor and control using conventional security programmes, reports Vnunet.
Meanwhile internet security firm, Aladdin, has claimed LinkedIn, another popular peer-to-peer site may be used for corporate espionage.
According to the firm, information posted by employees online may be unwittingly revealing company strategies as "individuals generally make no distinction between public or confidential corporate data that they disseminate".
