Identity Theft - Phishing

ICONIX, Inc., the leader in providing visual email identification solutions, announced that its Iconix Truemark service is officially available to millions of PayPal account holders. What Iconix Truemark does is putting an icon next to legitimate email messages thus facilitating the visual identification of such messages by users and the prevention of phishing attacks.

In 2007 alone, these types of scams caused 3.6 million people the loss of a total $3.2 billion, which meant a forty per cent increase comparing to 2006. Jeff Wilbur, Vice President of Marketing, ICONIX, outlined the straightforward efficient approach of the service -“While traditional anti-virus and security companies focus on securing computers and applications, ICONIX enables people to make wise, informed decisions in their inboxes.”

Costumers will be able to see the Truemark Check-lockTM icon in their inbox next to messages from senders that have been checked as legitimate. This visual verification helps the consumers to rapidly distinguish which messages are reliable. Besides PayPal, Iconix provides services of email messages identification from almost 500 other companies, among which huge names such as eBay, Best Buy and Dell.

Mike Vergara, director of account protections at PayPal acknowledges the importance of using this kind of service now with an increasing development of phishing attacks - “Our customers have told us that tools like Iconix help them easily identify legitimate PayPal email, reducing their risk of falling for phishing attacks.”

The technology Iconix Truemark solution is employing is to validate the legitimacy of messages is industry standard one, for example DKIM, Domain Keys, SPF and SenderID. The next step is to verify the identification of the email sender against a list of registered senders with ICONIX, Inc. After an email goes through authentication and identification and is granted legitimacy, a Truemark Check-lock icon is showed in the consumer’s inbox.

The best is yet to come as this very useful service is free to users, and requires minimum effort to install and use. Once you have downloaded and installed a plug-in, Iconix eMail ID, you will right away be able to observe the Check-lock icon in your inbox.

There are many chief webmail clients like Earthlink, Gmail, Microsoft Windows Live Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail and also Microsoft Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook with which Iconix eMail ID is compatible. You can find the service at www.iconix.com, www.download.com and also on PayPal’s online Security Center which is https://www.paypal.com/security.
