Richmond based First Market Bank is warning hundreds of its customers that their accounts may have been compromised. The security breach affects roughly one-percent of First Market Bank customers.
While it didn't happen in the bank, officials are acting quickly, to make sure that no one illegally accesses your account. That includes cutting off some debit cards.
First Market Bank officials say one of Visa's merchants experienced the security breach and that Visa alerted the bank that a merchant's database had experienced unauthorized access.
The result was that check card information of more than 800 customers was compromised.
If you're one of the affected customers of First Market Bank, expect to see a letter in your mailbox detailing what happened and how the bank is trying to prevent anyone from stealing your money."
Bank spokesperson Katie Gilstrap says, "First Market Bank will ensure that no customer will experience any loss, on any of their accounts, as a result of this event."
If you're an affected customer, your current debit card will be no good after November 15th. But you should receive a new card before then.
In the meantime, bank officials say you should check your statement: frequently and thoroughly.
First Market Bank encourages customers with any questions to call their customer care center, at 1-888-242-0971.
