Secunia Alarms : over 95% of PCs contain one or more programs vulnerable to attack and this surprising statistics followed a study on computer vulnerability. ComputerWorld informs us that a vulnerability tracking company has reported that almost all Windows computers are probably using at least one unpatched application. According to the company four out of ten PCs have on them installed about 11 programs presenting high risk exposure.
According to Secunia ASP, a company originated in Copenhaga, its Personal Software Inspector (PSI) has been very well received by users and more than 95% of the computers that have been running this utility in the last week support at least one application in need for security protection
Secunia stated that within the last week 20,009 users have downloaded PSI and they are using it successfully. Already a newer version has been released to cover some of the weak points of the previous one although the secure version still has to be installed, Jakob Balle says.
Jakob Balle, Secunia's development manager offered further astonishing figures: 41.94% of the computers that used PSI for scanning in the past week surfaced 11 or more vulnerable programs; and over 67% of the them contain 6 or more unpatched programs.
It may be so that things are even worse than presented. According to Balle, the results tend to get more frightful as they get more accurate. However, the development manager did not forget to emphasize that "The users of the Secunia PSI are most likely more vigilant and security minded/conscious than your 'average' user."
The free patch has been on the market for a year now, but in January, Secunia shifted it to Release Candidate 1 (RC1). The company declared that approximately 191,000 customers are currently using its PSI.
