Security Incidents : Turkish and Swedish Hackers on the Edge of War

There is a cyber war developing between Turkish and Swedish hackers and there is a lot to be learned, says Tier-3, the behavioural analysis IT security software specialist.

Geoff Sweeney, CTO of Tier-3, said:
"Reportedly this war kicked off when several Swedish newspapers published a caricature of the Muslim prophet Muhammad earlier this month.

Turkish hackers started defacing Swedish Web sites leaving anti-Swedish messages, with Swedish hackers retaliating by breaking into the email and MSN accounts of Turkish forum users. Things started to escalate [recently] when Web sites operated by Linköping Cathedral and Gothenburg Council were both defaced, and I expect its possible this battle will escalate further".

Sweeney said that other companies can learn a lot from the methodology of the hackers in their various attacks they are using, saying:
"It proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that companies need to protect their Internet-connected resources using all available means possible.

Conventional IT security technology is clearly not stopping hackers on both sides from carrying out their attacks”. Because of this, Sweeney said that companies need to turn to more advanced systems such as behavioural analysis software if they are to protect their technology assets, explaining:

"Behavioural analysis offers extra protection that conventional IT security systems cannot. It acts as a safety net against unknown, as well as known, attack vectors, and complements existing IT security systems and software".
