Web Security

McAfee, Inc. today announced the achievement of a significant milestone in consumer protection: McAfee SiteAdvisor, the world's leading safe search and surf technology, has been downloaded more than 75 million times by Internet users.

McAfee is the leading security provider offering the integrated proactive and preventative protection of SiteAdvisor, with easy-to-understand safety ratings that clearly indicate whether a site is risky or not. This helps consumers avoid malware such as browser exploits that make the PC inoperable, as well as adware, spam, viruses and other online dangers that could slow the PC and make it difficult to use.

The SiteAdvisor safe search technology also includes browser-based anti-phishing protection to shield consumers from sites designed to steal personal information. McAfee SiteAdvisor is increasingly vital to the online safety of millions of Web consumers. In fact, consumers ask for SiteAdvisor's safety ratings 850 million times each day.

"Identity theft alone now costs more than $3,000 per victim, which makes proactive Web protection absolutely critical. That's exactly what McAfee SiteAdvisor provides," said Tim Dowling, VP, Consumer Growth Initiatives. "The simple red, yellow and green safety ratings show consumers which sites are safe before they visit them, and that's the best way to avoid dangerous and risky places. Consumers clearly appreciate the value of this solution, which is why our offering has been so widely embraced."

For consumers who want even more protection, McAfee SiteAdvisor Plus features enhanced protection to secure all Internet "on-ramps" with Web site ratings embedded in email and instant messaging, making it the only email and instant message-based phishing and malware protection on the market. Another integrated SiteAdvisor Plus feature is "Protected Mode," which extends its protection from warning about risky sites to enforcing the avoidance of them for kids/teens and any other household PC users.

McAfee SiteAdvisor, which is integrated into all of McAfee's security suites, works with Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox for the MacOS, Linux and PC platforms. It is available at http://us.mcafee.com. SiteAdvisor has received numerous honors, including: 5-star reviews from CNET's download.com, Time Magazine's "50 Coolest Web Sites," Popular Science's "Best of What's New" and the U.S. Department of Commerce's "Recognition of Excellence in Innovation" honor.
