Adware - Spyware : Top 10 Web and Email Security Threats for August 2007

Adware - Spyware

Sophos has released the Top 10 Security threats for August 2007 in an effort to illustrate some of the most prevalent Web and Email security threats we are facing today.

One of the most notorious change in August is the dramatic drop in email malware with one infested email in every 1000 emails during August as opposed to one in 322 averaging for January - June 2007.

On the other hand, spam continues to be a nuisance because most of the spam emails contain links to compromised webpages designed to infect the users' PCs. These emails employ heavy social engineering skills in presenting the perfect click bait : e-cards such as 123greetings.com, pictures of nude celebrities, YouTube movies and others.

In August, the total number of infected webpages was constantly growing reaching 5000 / day, albeit at a slightly slower rate than July which yielded more than 6000 infected webpages everyday.

One other August special was a huge spike in pump-and-dump stock spam and this was caused by what is called the biggest ever single spam campaign for manipulating stock prices.
