Security Incidents : Monster.com Data Breach Updates
Posted by Max on 2007/9/2 14:39:46 (467 reads)
Security Incidents

In the wake of the recent security breach, Monster.com has confirmed that it's databases have been targeted before. The company admits that the data leakage has been going for longer and the number of affected customers could be higher than original 1.3 milion estimates.

As this wouldn't have been enough, it appears that the Monster.com security incident has allready made collateral damage. Among other tasks, Monster is the technology provider for USAJobs.gov website which belongs to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management. USAJobs.gov has over 2 milion registered users and it's a very popular place to post resume or federal job openings.

It is not clear how many USAJobs.gov accounts have been compromised, but one thing is sure : there was no SSN leakage because of a security filtering applied by USAJobs.gov. Smart move.

The USAJobs revelation is the latest twist in the ongoing fallout from the data breach affecting Monster.com. Symantec notified Monster on Aug. 17 that a hacker-controlled server contained personal data including e-mail and home addresses and resume identification numbers for more than 1 million Monster customers.

An investigation revealed that the data had been swiped using legitimate log-on credentials stolen from recruiters and human resources personnel with corporate Monster.com accounts.
