AOL introduced the new AOL Internet Security Central (http://safety.aol.com), offering a comprehensive suite of free safety and security tools designed to ensure a safer and more secure online experience, and provide overall PC protection. Included in the offering is the new McAfee® VirusScan® Plus -- Special edition from AOL, offering essential protection against viruses, spyware and intruders at no charge through AOL.com.

“With the launch of AOL® Internet Security Central, we are offering consumers the most comprehensive suite of free safety and security products available," said Steve Murphy, Senior Vice President, AOL Client and Safety Management. “By combining McAfee’s security service with AOL’s Parental Controls and premier security features, we can ensure a safer experience for our users and their personal computers.”

Automatically on-guard, and up-to-date, McAfee VirusScan Plus – Special edition from AOL offers essential tools designed to safeguard the online experience and personal computer. It provides virus protection to guard the whole PC; spyware protection to block potentially unwanted programs; and a two-way firewall that helps block hackers.

In addition, McAfee VirusScan Plus – Special edition from AOL also features behavior-based threat protection which warns about specific behaviors that may signal virus, spyware, or hacker activity; protection against stealth threats, and even PC performance tools. The service is available at no charge to all users with a free AOL® or AIM® screen name.

”We are very excited that AOL is offering a special edition of our VirusScan Plus service to its members,” said Todd Gebhart, Senior Vice President and General Manager, McAfee Consumer, Mobile and Small Business. “We have had a long alliance with AOL, and we look forward to our continued partnership.”

Other free downloads and tools available on AOL Internet Security Central include:
  • AOL® Parental Controls: Software designed to give parents the tools they need to help protect their children from inappropriate or dangerous online material. Easy-to-use features of the software include standard age-based access controls, as well as specific controls on IM and chat, online timers, and e-mail reports on children’s online activities.
  • Computer Check-Up: Automatically scans for and fixes more than 30 PC and Internet problems.
  • Active Security Monitor: An easy way for consumers to know if they are protected from computer viruses, spyware, identity theft, network intrusions and other security threats, the Active Security Monitor offers quick fixes and recommendations for resolving security vulnerabilities.
  • Phishing Protection: People using AOL® 9.0 or another recent version of the AOL software (also available free) will get automatic protection from known phishing sites thanks to reports from millions of AOL users and several Internet-monitoring firms.
  • Spam Protection: AOL® Mail blocks more than 1 billion pieces of spam each day, and gives users the ability to block junk mail by keyword or sender; report spam; and manage their own spam folders.
  • Web Pop-up Controls: AOL’s pop-up controls let users choose which pop-up and animated ads they want to see online, as well as tame animated Web ads when they are using the AOL software.
